BBC Local Radio’s most downloaded show celebrated ten successful years by expanding online to a new home for loyal listeners at stereounderground.co.uk. The two hour indie and alternative music show was recommissioned by BBC England’s Head of Audio and Digital, as part of the corporation’s Digital First initiative and in its last six months at the BBC attracted record digital audiences on the BBC Sounds platform.
Stereo Underground’s Development Producer Sabina Latto said “We are now available in a new place, on the Mixcloud app, in association with live events organiser Planet Of The Tapes who have some exciting plans for us featuring the biggest guests and dedicated rewards for the show’s loyal listenership.”
“We thank the BBC for the ten years of support and this opportunity to build on the exponential growth Stereo Underground has enjoyed on BBC Sounds and are thrilled with the league of fans who have come with us on our exciting new adventure. There is so much love and support for the show from listeners particularly as the music and shared storytelling has helped so many people bond over their indie experiences.”
Stereo Underground launched on BBC Radio in June 2014 and was soon syndicated on nine BBC local radio stations across the south of the British Isles. Over the years Stereo Underground guests have included Noel Gallagher, Shirley Manson and Johnny Marr.
The show now also has a TV version, broadcast multiple times each week on national television channel Rewind TV, which is available across the UK on Freeview channel 92, Sky TV (through the dish) 182 and Freely 150. Hosted by Richard, this showcases video requests and stories from SU fans and plays a selection of popular indie and alternative music videos.
Thanking the listeners to Stereo Underground, presenter Richard Latto said: “They have been a tremendous support on-air and on social media during its ten years on the BBC. We are now breaking global records on MixCloud, and it's continued proof of the powerful and unique relationship as we come together to independently unite music fans of all ages who are alternative at heart.”
In addition to serving its extensive online audience, the show is offering a syndicated audio version to radio broadcasters around the world. If you are interested in taking the show, email the team at latto@stereounderground.co.uk
